  • 1637
    Jiemon Okura opened his brewery "Kasagiya" in modern day Fushimi; names his sake "Tama-no-Izumi“ - "Jewel of the (Water) Spring"
  • 1886
    Tsunekichi Okura became the 11th successor of Gekkeikan, revolutionized the industry, and expanded the business.
  • 1905
    The brand name "Gekkeikan", a symbol of victory and glory, is registered as a trademark.
  • 1909
    For the first time in the sake brewing industry, sake brewing methods were scientifically analyzed through Gekkeikan's establishment of the "Okura Sake Brewing Research Institute."
  • 1911
    Bottled sake with no added preservatives was introduced to the Japanese market.
  • 1927
    The company was incorporated as Okura Tsunekichi Shoten, Co., Ltd.
  • 1944
    The company was renamed "Okura Sake Company, Ltd."
  • 1961
    Advanced brewing techniques were developed, enabling Gekkeikan Sake to be brewed throughout the year.
  • 1984
    Nama (unpasteurized) sake that did not require refrigeration was produced and sold using ultra-micro-filter technology.

    An aseptic filling system was installed.
  • 1987
    The company was renamed "Gekkeikan Sake Company, Ltd." in commemoration of the 350th anniversary of establishment and the 60th anniversary of incorporation.
  • 1989
    Gekkeikan Sake (USA), Inc. was established in Folsom, California, USA.
  • 1993
    The new head office in Fushimi, Kyoto was established.
  • 2011
    Gekkeikan (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. was established in Shanghai, China.
